Three Days Training Programme on “Popularization of Scientific Beekeeping for Tribal Farmers of Meghalaya”

        A three days training programme on “Popularization of Scientific Beekeeping for Tribal Farmers of Meghalaya” was organized by the Division of Crop Science on 5th -7th March, 2026, at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP). A total of 26 participants from three different villages (Umramblei and Byrwa) under Umsning Block and Mawbsein under Bhoirymbong block, RiBhoi district of Meghalaya participated in the programme. Dr. Rumki H. Ch. Sangma, Senior Scientist, Division of Crop Science, gave the welcome address and highlighted the importance of scientific beekeeping and its scope in Meghalaya. Lectures were delivered on honey bee species, management of scientific beekeeping, equipments and use of its accessories, processing of honey and other hive products and hive splitting. Dr. Khrieketou Kuotsu gave lecture on pests and diseases of honey bees and floral sources in Meghalaya and further demonstrated on the types of scientific bee box and processing of honey. Mr. Tlan Sing Mukhim, a progressive beekeeper also shared his experience and demonstrated on hive splitting. An interaction among scientists and beekeepers was also held, where the queries of the beekeepers were answered by the scientists. Dr. Pankaj Baiswar, Head, Division of Crop Science highlighted the importance of scientific beekeeping for livelihood improvement and encouraged the beekeepers to become entrepreneurs on beekeeping and honey business. The scientific beekeeping tools (modern bee hive-52 nos., Queen excluder sheet-52 nos., bee veil-26 nos., hand glove-26 nos., knife-26 nos., smoker-26 nos., and honey extractor-8 nos.) were also distributed to the participants. The programme was coordinated by, Dr. Rumki H. Ch. Sangma, Dr. Krishnappa R., Dr. Y Bijenkumar, Dr. Hammylliende Talang, Dr. M. Bilashni Devi and Dr. Pankaj Baiswar of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya. The coordinators are grateful to Dr. B. P. Singh, PS and Nodal officer, TSP, for funding the programme and also to the technical, YP and contractual staff of Entomology, DCS, for assisting the programme.
